Since 1890, the U.S. Census has recorded the age at which people report they were married for the first time. In 1956, men were, on average, 22.5 years old when they first got married. Women were, on average, 20.1 years old. In 2005, the median age at which men were married for the first time was 27 years old. For women, the median age was 25.5 years old.
