Thomas Jefferson hoped America would become an agrarian nation and for much of its history, it was. During Jefferson’s lifetime, the rural population always made up over 90% of the total population. However, the 1910 U.S. census was the last to record a greater percentage of rural folks to urbanites—54.4% of U.S. residents were listed as rural. The percentage continues to drop. In the 2000 census, only 21% of the population was reported as being rural.
