Notable Deserts of the World

If you live in the northern hemisphere (like the editors of The World Almanac for Kids) you may be feeling the heat of summer. But you probably don't live in a desert. Deserts are defined as regions of the Earth receiving less than 10 in. of precipitation annually, usually in combination with an evaporation rate exceeding precipitation.

You might not realize that Antarctica is generally considered a desert. Annual precipitation averages 8 in. along the coast and far less in the deep interior; however, there is little evaporation. To learn about other great deserts of the world, click below.
