The Sahara is the world’s biggest desert. It covers about 3.5 million square miles and stretches 3,200 miles across northern Africa from the Atlantic coast to the Red Sea and Egypt, an area about equal to the lower 48 U.S. states combined. Despite the common belief that deserts are made of sand, only about 30% of the Sahara is sand. The rest of the surface is covered by gravel and bare rock.
