All About...The Transcontinental Railroad

The California Gold Rush of 1849 made people realize the need to build a railroad to speed the trip from California to the east. In 1862 Congress authorized funds to build the railroad. The Union Pacific was to build west from Omaha, Nebraska, and the Central Pacific east from Sacramento, California. From 1866 to 1869, the two companies struggled to overcome rugged terrain, desert heat, freezing winters, and Indian attacks. Chinese, Irish, and other immigrant workers were brought in to complete the task. Finally, in 1869, the two roads were joined at Promontory Point in Utah. A golden spike was driven into the last tie to commemorate this milestone.
