Why Is Ocean Water Salty?

Ocean water

NOAA

Seawater

When it rains, fresh water falls to Earth. This water doesn't taste salty if you drink it. The water then seeps through the ground into streams. Along the way, it erodes rocks and soil, and picks up minerals or "salts." Then the water flows into the ocean. When the water evaporates into the air and becomes rain water again, the salt stays in the ocean because it doesn't evaporate.
